Ants lay a scent trail from the nest to food, so a steady line of ants along worktops, skirting boards or door frames is the most common sign.
Ants in sugar, cereals, honey, jam or pet food mean foragers have found an easy food source and are recruiting more.
Fine soil or sand along skirting boards, around patio doors or between paving slabs can show where ants are nesting or tunnelling.
Ants coming in through gaps around windows, doors and pipework are usually nesting outside, in the garden, under the patio or in wall foundations.
Winged ants appearing inside the house, rather than outside, can mean there’s a nest under the floor or in a wall cavity.
The most common ant in UK homes. They’re small and dark brown to black, usually nest outdoors under paving, lawns and walls, and come inside looking for sweet food, especially in spring and summer.
Tiny, pale yellow-brown ants that live in warm, heated buildings such as flats, hospitals, care homes and hotels. They nest in wall voids and behind fittings, and spraying them can make a colony split and spread, so they need specialist treatment.
Red ants are common in gardens and lawns. They sometimes come indoors, and unlike black garden ants they can sting.
Flying ants are young queens and males leaving the nest to mate, usually on warm, humid days in July and August.
Most of the colony, including the queen, stays in the nest. It may be under the patio, in the foundations or inside a wall, well away from the trail you can see.

Pharaoh ant colonies have many queens and spread through heated buildings along pipes and wiring. Treating them the wrong way makes the problem worse.
Sprays kill the ants you can see but rarely reach the nest. As long as the queen survives, the colony keeps sending out new foragers along the same trail.
