Tiny, round beetles about 3mm long, mottled brown, white and yellow, gathering on windowsills in spring and early summer. Adults are drawn to light as they try to get outside to feed on pollen.
Small, brown, bristly larvae, a few millimetres long, in dark undisturbed places: under furniture, along carpet edges, in wardrobes, airing cupboards and lofts.
Irregular holes in wool clothing and bare or thinning patches in carpets and rugs, often in areas that are rarely vacuumed.
As the larvae grow, they leave behind light brown, hairy, empty skins that look like the larvae themselves.
The tiny hairs on the larvae can irritate the skin, causing an itchy rash that’s often mistaken for insect bites.
The most common carpet beetle in UK homes. Adults are small, rounded and patterned; the larvae do the damage, feeding on wool, fur, feathers, silk, leather and even dead insects and bird nests.
