Cockroaches come out after dark. Seeing them run for cover when you turn a light on is the most common sign, and seeing them in daylight can point to a large infestation.

Larger, around 2.5cm, dark brown to black and shiny. They like cooler, damp places such as basements, under floors, around pipework and in drains, and often get into buildings through damaged drainage.
