Flea bites are small, red and very itchy, usually in clusters around the ankles and lower legs, because fleas jump up from the floor.
Constant scratching, biting at their fur, or bald or sore patches, especially around the base of the tail, are common signs in cats and dogs.
Tiny black specks in your pet’s fur or bedding are flea droppings. Put them on damp white paper: if they turn reddish-brown, it’s flea dirt.
Small, dark insects jumping onto socks and ankles when you walk across carpets or rugs, especially in rooms where pets sleep.
Flea cocoons can lie dormant for months, then hatch all at once when they sense movement and warmth. That’s why fleas often appear after moving into a new home or coming back from time away.
Adult fleas are about 2 to 3mm long, reddish-brown, flattened from side to side and wingless. They move quickly and jump surprisingly high. The cat flea is by far the most common in UK homes, and it lives on dogs too.
